British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
