Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
