Some experts said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using the platform's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Service Moderation and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using social media.
